Whittlesey's UCL bow saw them succumb to a pacy display of attacking football which saw hosts Buckby kick off the new campaign in style.
The opening half hour was evenly contested with chances at either end.
Buckby had the first opening with Manny Salumu's clever reverse pass playing in Dale Linton who shot into the side netting as goalkeeper Lewis Moat advanced.
Joe Butterworth was wuide from distance for the visitors while for Buckby Ed Kostiuk tried his luck from distance only for Moat to save.
Jake Pell put a header across goal for Athletic when unmarked at a set piece while Liam Harrold just failed to connect with a Ricky Hailstone free kick.
Buckby broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval with Linton's great run down the left and cut back finding Salumu well placed to fire into the roof of the net.
Jack Bates clipped the crossbar as Whittlesey replied on resumption but it was Buckby who scored a vital second goal after 54 minutes, Kostiuk turning in Simon Barby's delivery from the left.
Salumu shot over after a solo run while at the other end Harrold had a chance to get Whittlesey back in the game but glanced his header wide from a Tom Flatters flag kick from the right.
Buckby again responded with a decisive strike after 69 minutes, Salumu the provider with a right wing run and cross which presented Kostiuk with a simple far post finish.
Linton was denied a debut goal by the assistant's flag but after 72 minutes he netted the goal he deserved with a break on the left, cutting inside the last defender and firing home via the far post.
The scoreline was harsh on the visitors who scored a 78th minute consolation with the goal of the game, a 25 yard volley from Butterworth.
Salumu almost restored the four goal margin charging down Moat's attempted clearance only for the ball to lose pace as it rolled towards the unguarded goal allowing a defender to clear.
Bates curled a shot wide for Whittlesey before the last opening fell to Salumu whose shot was tipped round the post by Moat.
