Peterborough Sports, making their first appearance since clinching the championship, were given a guard of honour by the Yaxley players and a warm welcome by the 220 strong crowd as they entered the field of play at the start of the match. However the welcome didn't last long as Matt Sparrow tucked away a neat finish after just four minutes to give Yaxley the lead. Sports soon hit back. A minute later Mark Jones headed a good chance over but there were just eight minutes on the clock when a stunning 30 yard shot from Dan Bucciero levelled the scores. Yaxley had the better of the remainder of a very entertaining first half and frequently threatened to regain the lead. Sam Spencer put a close-range header over and Phil Stebbing hit the bar from what seemed an impossible angle after stealing the ball away from goalkeeper Lewis Moat, who was attempting to shield the ball out of play. Sparrow had an opportunity for his second after 29 minutes but chose to step inside instead of shooting and was crowded out but two minutes later Liam Hook skillfully skipped round a defender and scored to give Yaxley a deserved lead. However in stoppage time at the end of the half Jones scrambled another equaliser for Sports.
The weather took a turn for the worse in the second half but the high quality football continued with Sports having the better of it after the break. A shot from distance by David Cobb that went narrowly wide and a looping shot from Jordan Macleod which produced a good save from Oliver Sutton had already threatened the Yaxley goal before Jones scored his second of the evening with a header from a corner after an hour. Sports had chances to increase their lead: Jones missed badly from 15 yards, a long range shot from Macleod clipped the bar and Jones was denied a hat trick by a fine, last ditch tackle from Spencer. However there was another twist at the end of this outstanding game as Stebbing grabbed a Yaxley equaliser in stoppage time and there was still time for Yaxley almost to nick it at the death when a shot from Hook was deflected narrowly wide.
